慶長14（1609）年9月30日未明、メキシコへ航海中のサン・フランシスコ号（乗組員373名）が嵐によって御宿沖で座礁。命からがら泳ぎ着いたドン・ロドリゴ総督をはじめ乗組員317人を村人が総出で救助し、着物や食料を提供しました。
その後、ドン・ロドリゴ一行は当時の大多喜城主本多忠朝を介して、徳川家康や２代将軍の秀忠と謁見し、翌年には家康が建造させた新しい船で無事メキシコへ帰国しました。
1873（明治６）年、欧米を視察中の岩倉使節団はドン・ロドリゴ一行の話を知らされます。鎖国によって忘れられていた史実に再び光がさしました。
その後1928（昭和３）年に、ドン・ロドリゴ一行が漂着した岩和田海岸近くの高台に日本とスペイン、メキシコの交通の発祥として記念之碑が建立されました。
